Chair’s Report for 2008

Living with Diabetes Day held at York House on Saturday 8 November

More than 100 participants heard from dieticians, podiatrists, a specialist nurse and a consultant diabetologist about various aspects of diabetes care. The work of Diabetes UK’s Careline was presented. The care line provides an information and support service to people with diabetes, their families and carers; it is accessible by phone 0845 120 2960, textphone 020 7424 1031 and email careline@diabetes.org.uk

Donations

From Cllr. Marc Cranfield-Adams we received £14,279.69 – the sum raised by the Mayor’s Charity Fund during his term of office. We also received donations from Twickenham Townswomen’s Guild of £150 and Waitrose Twickenham’s Community Matters Scheme of £332. We are grateful to all who were involved in donating and fundraising

Research

Following a poll of members we allocated £2,000 of the Mayor’s Funds to the adoption of two Diabetes UK research projects:

We hope to have progress reports in the form of talks from both research teams in the coming year.

Local Activities

We plan to do more in 2009, particularly in relation to information and education of patients and their carers

Meetings in 2009

Please see our News page for the latest information

Communication

Our occasional newsletters and this website are our main means of communication with you. But they are mainly one way.

At our meetings, usually held on Tuesday evenings at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Twickenham we do get some feedback and ideas of what sort of support and information you would like us to provide.

However, not everyone can get to these meetings and we would like to hear from you about any subjects that you would like aired or issues that you would like us to take up.

If you have any ideas on these matters, including possible alternative times or venues for meetings, please let us know by writing to me at 21 Wolsey Road, Hampton Hill, TW12 1QP or email at chair@DUKRT.org.uk - or better still come along to the next meeting.

Best wishes for the New Year
Alastair Mackinlay, Chair
